A correctly fitted chastity cage feels like almost nothing for most of the day. You notice it at three moments: when you first put it on, when you get an erection (pressure, never pain), and when you take it off, which is when you feel like you are forgetting something. Everything else people report online, the pinching, the constant awareness, is what a badly sized cage feels like.
We have made cages to measure since 2009, so what follows is not one man’s review; it is what years of fitting emails add up to, from the first minute to the first night.

The first hour
The base ring is what you notice first. It sits behind the testicles, and for the first few minutes it is simply there. Then the cage goes on, the lock closes, and you stand up.
The weight registers; on a Jail Bird in an average size that is about 5 oz (roughly 140 g), and it is carried by the ring rather than hanging from you. And you find out whether the cage was sized right, because a cage with no extra room inside holds itself up without pulling. If yours hangs or tugs, it is too long, and you will know within the hour.
Sitting takes a little thought the first few times; skin moving across smooth stainless does the adjusting for you. Urinating standing up is possible through open bars; the first time you will probably look down, and then never again.
The first erection
The cage does not prevent erections. It just doesn’t allow the penis to grow. So, the first attempted erection, which arrives sooner than you expect, is pressure: the penis fills the cage in length and girth, meets the steel, and stops. There is no pain in a cage that fits. That pressure can be one of the greatest feelings; it is a reminder that the Keyholder is in control. Then the erection subsides and the cage goes back to being nothing.
If it hurts instead, the size is wrong, and usually the cage is too long, or the cage diameter is too big. Extra length lets more blood in and the cage pulls away with more force, like a balloon filled halfway. That is the usual story behind a cage that “hurts when I get hard”; the fix is a shorter cage or smaller diameter cage.
Days two through seven
By the second or third day a fitted cage disappears into the routine. Ordinary clothes hide a low-profile design like the Jail Bird. You shower in it, washing with mild antibacterial soap through the bars and drying it well, then a drop of baby oil gel under the base ring so skin doesn’t drag. Most of the adjustment is to the base ring, and the reviews we receive put that at about a week.
Then comes a stretch where you forget, and reach down at some point to check the cage is still there. That is the standard we build to.
The night
Nights are different, and honesty beats reassurance here. Erections happen during sleep, and the pressure will wake you at first. The one to plan for is the double whammy, an erection and a full bladder at the same time; the only solution is to sit on the toilet until the erection subsides. Try not to drink a lot of liquids right before bed. Keep the key handy for the first while, because a cage that is comfortable by day can feel totally different at night. If you cannot sleep in yours, that is almost always the length or the gap talking, and what actually happens when you sleep in a cage works through it.
When it comes off
You take the cage off, and for the first minutes you feel like you are forgetting something. That feeling is the surest sign the fit was right. Our standard for a cage is that pair of sentences: you forget you are wearing it, and you feel like you are forgetting something when it is off.
What it feels like when the size is wrong
Every uncomfortable sensation in a cage maps to a size, and on our devices every size except the cage inside diameter can be adjusted after delivery.
| What you feel | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Cage shifts all day; extra space at the tip; weight you don’t need | Too long. Shortest ruler reading minus 1/4″ is the length. |
| Puffy skin | Cage inside diameter too small. Flaccid, you should just fill the diameter with no skin sticking out. |
| Burning sensation in the scrotum, often overnight | Gap too small. |
| Stomach pain, or testicles that feel like they are in a vise | Gap most likely too big. |
| Cage slides down; testicles slip out | Gap too big first, then a lock shank that lets the ring swing, then (rarely) the base ring. A double base ring holds the cage closer to the body. |
| Skin folding and pinching during an erection | Plastic sticking to skin. Steel lets skin move. |
Remove the cage for pain or any other emergency, then match the symptom to its size with seven ways a cage fits wrong and read how long you can wear a chastity cage. The complete sizing guide explains where each size comes from.
